Administration of the President of the United States Donald Trump has begun actively promoting the idea of creating a global digital economy free of import duties and restrictions. About this reports Bloomberg.

As part of new trade agreements with Malaysia and Cambodia and a preliminary agreement with Thailand, the United States received guarantees that these countries will not impose taxes on digital services or discriminate against American companies in online commerce, social media, streaming, or cloud technologies.

These provisions should consolidate the US leadership in digital trade, the fastest growing segment of the global economy, which reached more than $4.7 trillion in exports in 2024.

According to analysts, Trump is using tariffs to protect American manufacturing, but at the same time, he is seeking to make the Internet completely free of taxes and protectionism to maintain the US advantage in digital services.

The new agreements also provide for support for the permanent moratorium on the World Trade Organization (WTO) on the introduction of duties on electronic transmissions, which has been in effect since 1998.

Experts note that Trump's initiative reflects Washington's strategic desire to strengthen the position of American technology giants – the Google, Meta, Amazon – in the global digital economy, while the EU, on the other hand, is pushing for stricter regulation and taxation of this area.
