Gas imports to Ukraine increased ninefold and became the highest in five years

The volume of natural gas imports to Ukraine reached 6.47 billion cubic meters in 2025. This is the highest figure in the last five years – since 2020, testify calculations by the consulting company ExPro. Compared to 2024, imports increased almost ninefold – from 724 million to 6.47 billion cubic meters.
Throughout 2025, natural gas imports were uneven. In January, the volumes were minimal – only 43 million cubic meters, because Ukraine and Naftogaz then expected to go through the heating season at the expense of their own production.
In February, the situation changed dramatically: imports increased to 512 million cubic meters – the highest in a year and a half. This increase was a direct result of Russian shelling at the beginning of the month. In March and April, imports stabilized at 220–280 million cubic meters per month – less than in February, but significantly more than during 2024.
The largest volumes of gas were imported in July 2025 – 833 million cubic meters. This is a record figure in almost two years, since September 2023, and is associated with active preparations for the new heating season.
In 2025, Hungary became the main destination for natural gas imports for Ukraine – 2.94 billion cubic meters, or 45.5% of the total volume, were imported from there. Poland took second place with 2.1 billion cubic meters, or 32.5% of imports.
Another 1.33 billion cubic meters, or 20.5%, were imported from Slovakia. Despite the fact that the Slovak route has the largest technical capacity, high tariffs make it less attractive compared to the Hungarian and Polish routes.
Also in 2025, Ukraine increased gas imports from the south – via the Trans-Balkan route (Vertical Corridor). 97 million cubic meters, or 1.5% of the total import volume, were delivered from there.
In the middle of the year, a new route, Route 1, was launched – a joint product of operators from Ukraine, Moldova, Romania, Bulgaria and Greece. It provides for the transportation of gas from Greece to Ukraine at reduced tariffs. Over 70 million cubic meters of natural gas were pumped through this route during the year.
- On December 22, it became known that Ukraine, together with neighboring countries, launched two new interstate routes for natural gas imports – Route 2 and Route 3 within the framework of the "Vertical Corridor" initiative.
