Oil imports from Russia to India are declining – statement by the oil minister

India's imports of Russian oil will continue to decline as the world's third-largest fuel buyer diversifies its suppliers, Indian Oil Minister Hardeep Puri said in interview Bloomberg Television. Russian supplies have already fallen to 1.3 million barrels per day from an average of 1.8 million barrels last year.
"There is a downward trend. This is due to market conditions," Puri said.
The US has increased pressure on India to purchase Russian oil, including through additional tariffs. At the same time, despite the decline in import volumes, supplies remain relatively stable, largely due to favorable price discounts.
The minister noted that the Indian government has not given any directives regarding the purchase of Russian oil, and the decisions are made by the companies themselves. According to him, the country now has the opportunity to diversify its sources of supply and is already importing oil from 41 countries.
Puri also said that Indian companies are interested in increasing oil supplies from Canada and the United States.
- In early August 2025, India's state-owned refineries purchases suspended Russian oil, but Russia has started offering big discounts, so supplies have been restored.
- August 27, 2025, the US Presidential Administration Donald Trump introduced 50% duty on imports of Indian goods to punish the country for buying Russian oil.
