US President Donald Trump has announced a one-year trade agreement with China. He said this during a briefing on board Air Force One after the talks.

According to him, the conversation with Chinese leader Xi Jinping was "amazing".

"Overall I guess on the scale of from 0 to 10 with 10 being the best I would say the meeting was a 12," Trump said.

"We have an agreement. Every year we will review this agreement, but I think it will last a long time, much longer than a year," he said.

A key element of the agreement was China's promise to continue exporting rare earth metals. China agreed not to impose previously announced export restrictions for a year.

Trump said that after the first year of the agreement, the parties will hold further talks, but he expects the extension to be "very routine".

For its part, the United States will immediately reduce the so-called "fentanyl" duties from 20% to 10%, because, according to Trump, Xi Jinping has promised to crack down on the export of fentanyl precursors. The overall tariff rate on Chinese goods remains at around 45-47%.

The US President also announced his visit to China in April 2026.

NPR indicates that Trump and Xi's talks in South Korea lasted an hour and 40 minutes and were held without a press briefing. Trump went straight aboard the presidential plane and flew to Washington after nearly a week in the Indo-Pacific.

  • After talks with Xi, Trump instructed the Pentagon to immediately resume testing of US nuclear weapons, which have not been conducted since 1992.
