EU officially extends temporary protection for Ukrainians until 2027
On July 15, the Council of the European Union made the final decision to extend temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees until March 4, 2027. This was reported by Suspilne from Brussels.
The document is based on the provisions of the relevant EU Directive, which allows for the extension of temporary protection if return to the country of origin is impossible due to war or massive human rights violations.
The extension of this status allows Ukrainian citizens to continue to legally live, work, study and receive basic social support in the EU without the need to apply for refugee status.
In addition, Member States will continue to exchange information to avoid double registration of protection in several countries.
The EU Council emphasizes that Russia's full-scale invasion continues and that the security situation in Ukraine remains extremely difficult.
According to the Ministry of Unity, about 5 million Ukrainians have been under temporary protection since the start of the full-scale invasion, and this number is growing. 60% of them are in Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic.
- The European Union will create a special representative for Ukrainians in the EU. The post will be held by Ylva Johansson.
