Nearly $1 million in cash found at home of Ukrainian environmental official

The State Bureau of Investigation and the Office of the Prosecutor General reported that the head of a department of the State Environmental Inspectorate in the Prydniprovia District has been arrested on suspicion of illicit enrichment.

During a search, investigators found undeclared cash totaling $880,000 and €210,000.

In addition to the cash, the investigation alleges that the suspect concealed ownership of an apartment exceeding 100 square meters in a premium residential complex, as well as a BMW 520i. The property was registered under the name of a relative.

The woman was detained under Article 368-5 of the Criminal Code (illicit enrichment). The court ordered pre-trial detention with an alternative of bail set at UAH 30 million.

Under this article, the offense carries a potential sentence of up to 10 years’ imprisonment.

The State Environmental Inspectorate of the Prydniprovia District oversees compliance with environmental legislation in the Dnipro and Kirovohrad regions.
