Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi on Sunday, September 21, appealed to citizens to refuse foreign goods and give preference to local producers. About this writes Reuters.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump introduced a 50% duty on imports of Indian goods. In response, Modi has been promoting the Swadeshi campaign, which is the use of products made in India.

The prime minister's supporters are already calling for a boycott of popular American brands, including McDonald's, Pepsi and Apple which are in great demand among Indians.

"Many of the products we use every day are made abroad and we don't even know it... We have to give them up," Modi said, adding: "We have to buy products made in India."

The Indian prime minister also urges retail store owners to emphasize domestic products to boost economic growth.

India, with a population of 1.4 billion, is one of the largest markets for American goods, especially through online retailers Amazon.
