EU to standardize most device chargers on USB-C starting in 2028
The European Commission has approved a new regulation that requires most chargers with a power of up to 100 W to be equipped with a USB Type-C port and meet common compatibility standards. About reported in the Official Journal of the EU.
A special Common Charger logo will appear on the devices to inform consumers about the possibility of using one charger for different gadgets.
The new regulations will come into force on December 14, 2028.
External power supplies for wireless chargers, general-purpose battery chargers, as well as for routers, modems, game consoles, etc. will be subject to the new rules.
The list also includes power supplies for monitors and game consoles, provided that they are connected via an external converter and not just a 220-volt power cable.
- Starting in December 2024, smartphones and tablets sold in the European Union will be required to be labeled, are already required to have a USB-C connector for charging, and laptops will receive this requirement by April 2026.
