Ukraine’s first Japanese modular bridge to be built in Ternopil region
A bridge will be built in Ternopil Oblast using modular structures manufactured in Japan — the first project of its kind in Ukraine to utilize Japanese equipment, according to Regional Administration Head Vyacheslav Nehoda.
The temporary bridge will be constructed on the P-43 highway (Ternopil–Zbarazh–Lanivtsi) in the village of Chernykhivtsi, spanning the Hnizna River. It will replace an older structure that was damaged in June after a truck, exceeding the permitted weight limit, caused an accident.
The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is supplying the modular components under its Emergency Recovery Program as part of a grant to Ukraine. These modular systems can be assembled quickly, enabling transportation to resume in a short timeframe.
Construction is scheduled for completion, with the bridge opening to traffic, by October 1, 2025.
- In March 2025, it was announced that JICA plans to take over from USAID in implementing energy and infrastructure projects in Ukraine.
