The house in which Pope Leo XIV (Robert Francis Prevost) spent his childhood was purchased by the American village of Dalton (a suburb of Chicago) at a price 70% higher than the original price. This is reported by Bloomberg.

It is a three-bedroom house located about 32 km south of downtown Chicago. It was purchased for $375,000.

The village plans to turn this house into a local landmark with the support of the Archdiocese of Chicago.

The house was put up for sale for $219,000 in January – after a local realtor bought and renovated the property for only $66,000.

But in May, when Prevost was announced as the first American pope in history, the seller withdrew the property from the market and decided to hold a "luxury" auction with a starting price of $250,000.

At the same time, the Dalton authorities had other plans. The village's lawyer warned the auction organizers that the local authorities could buy the house by force through the mechanism of "eminent domain" (the right of the state to buy private real estate for public needs).

However, it did not come to that – the parties reached an agreement and signed a mutual purchase agreement.

The average price of a home in Dalton, according to Redfin, is approximately $177,000.
