EU to apply "preventive measures" to agri products from Ukraine

The European Union is going to apply "preventive measures" to agricultural products from Ukraine, the director of political communications of the European Commission, Dana Spinant, said at a briefing on Wednesday.

According to her, such a proposal is contained in the letter of the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to Ukraine's neighbors: Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania, and Bulgaria.

Von der Leyen stated that "a common European approach is needed to address these concerns [relating to Ukrainian agricultural products]", and not the unilateral measures that countries are currently taking.

Her proposal consists of three parts.

First, the second financial support package for affected farmers in the amount of 100 million euros is being prepared.

"Secondly, we will take preventive measures under the applicable trade rules with regard to certain categories of grain. This concerns, in particular, to wheat, corn, sunflower and rapeseed," she said.

Thirdly, the European Commission will launch an investigation into other "sensitive products" from Ukraine.

On April 15-16, Poland and Hungary, Slovakia on April 17, and Bulgaria on April 19 suspended the import of grain and other food products from Ukraine.
