Billions for gas. Will Ukraine have time to stock up on fuel before prices skyrocket?
On Monday, June 2, President Volodymyr Zelensky admitted that Ukraine is facing a gas shortage if "not all" of its production capacity is restored after the Russian shelling. The head of state specified that the resource shortage is currently estimated at about 1 billion euros. To cover this need, Kyiv is negotiating with Norway, which has already provided Naftogaz with funds for gas purchases this year.
However, the main problem is that the amount named by the president is approximate and far from the limit. It may increase significantly in accordance with the dynamics of world gas prices, further complicating preparations for the next autumn-winter period (AWP).
This spring, European quotes have been at a consistently low level, helped by the tariff and trade war between the US and China. If Sino-American relations warm up, the cost of gas could also go up. While Ukraine is not importing enough blue fuel to fill its gas storage facilities at low prices.
There are other factors that can stimulate the growth of gas prices. Among them, the scenario of lifting sanctions against Russia regarding the sale of liquefied natural gas (LNG) is generally positive for Ukraine. Its implementation depends on the polygon of political relations between the US, the EU and Russia.
