Ukraine plans to change the terms of preferential sales of natural gas to electricity producers to reduce their fuel consumption in the run-up to winter. This was announced LIGA.net said a top manager of a state-owned energy company, who spoke on condition of anonymity and is familiar with the situation.

Power generation began receiving gas from the state-owned Naftogaz at fixed prices in 2022-23. Thermal power plants (TPPs) needed support after massive Russian shelling. And gas-engine units needed an incentive to develop.

But in the current year 2025, the more pressing problem is the accumulation of gas for the next winter. Its burning by power companies complicates this process.

The government is still calculating the specific solutions to the problem, says the source. LIGA.netAmong the possible measures, in addition to increasing the cost of gas, is the obligation for gas-fired power plants to sell more electricity in the balancing segment of the wholesale market.
