Another nuclear power unit in Ukraine back from repair ahead of schedule

Another nuclear power unit in Ukraine has been taken out of repair ahead of schedule, the country’s energy ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.

Ukraine started repair works on nuclear power units in the summer amid power deficit caused by Russian occupation of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the biggest in Europe, and Russian attacks on energy infrastructure in general.

The unit will add an additional 415 MW of capacity to the power system, the ministry added.

It stressed that the electricity generated by Ukrainian power plants is generally sufficient to meet the consumers’ needs.

Of the planned 1.7 GW of additional capacity, 1.5 GW has already been added to the Ukrainian power system.

However, thousands of people in the Donetsk, Odesa, and Dnipro region were temporarily cut off from power due to Russian shelling and technical faults.
