Turkey's industry, universities and research institutes to build a nuclear reactor
Turkey has announced the launch of the "Domestic Nuclear Reactor Development Initiative" to develop nuclear energy technologies. About this reported minister of Industry and Technology of Turkey Mehmet Fatih Kacir.
The aim of the project is to:
- strengthening the country's energy security;
- reducing dependence on energy imports;
- contributing to the goal of reducing emissions to zero.
The project envisages the creation of high-tech reactors with the participation of Turkish industry, research institutes TENMAK and TÜBİTAK, and local universities.
Kacir emphasized that Turkey is committed to paving the way for nuclear energy technologies and strengthening its independence and power.
The country has already started accepting applications for the program. The deadline is December 31, 2025.
- In the Mediterranean region of Turkey, construction of Turkey's first nuclear power plant, Akkuyu, with a capacity of 4,800 MW, is underway. Because the nuclear power plant is being built by Rosatom, the construction was at risk of disruption.
- Rosatom is negotiating on sale of a 49% stake in the project Akkuyu NPP to attract additional funding.
- Earlier, The Wall Street Journal wrote that the Akkuyu project was likely used by to circumvent sanctions against the Russian Central Bank.
