A summer record in terms of electricity consumption in Ukraine was set at 9:40 pm on Wednesday, with the load on the power system one percent higher than on the hottest day so far, Ukrenergo said in a statement.

Although the average temperature on Wednesday was 4˚C lower than on 4 July, this summer’s hottest day so far, electricity consumption peaked between 9:00 pm and 10:00 pm, significantly increasing the load on the power system.

“In order to cover the rapidly growing consumption, we have to use capacities equivalent to several power units of power plants,” Ukrenergo said.

“Ukrenergo's dispatch centre engages all the power plants available in the power system that are in operation, but their capacity is significantly limited.”

The company added that the situation is further complicated by the fact that another unit of the nuclear power plant has been put under scheduled maintenance on Thursday as a large-scale repair campaign is underway at many power plants.

Ukrenergo, therefore, urged people to use electricity sparingly, especially between 4:00 pm and 11:00 pm

Separately, Ukrenergo CEO Volodymyr Kudrytskyi said that there are currently no plans to limit electricity use due to the heat.
