World's largest offshore wind farm to be built in Scotland: 4.1 GW capacity
The Scottish government has granted permission to build the world's largest offshore wind farm. About said SSE, the company that will implement the project.
The Berwick Bank wind farm, which is planned to be built about 38 km off the east coast of Scotland, will be able to provide electricity to 6 million households.
The project has been in development for about ten years. The government's approval is the last important step before bidding for state subsidies at the next wind energy auction, which will begin in August.
Berwick Bank has the potential to create 9,300 jobs in the UK, of which about 4,650 will be in Scotland. Over the entire period of the project's implementation, investments in the UK economy could amount to £8.3 billion.
"The project has the potential to increase Scotland's current operational renewable electricity generation capacity by almost 25%, supporting the country's efforts to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2045," the company said in a statement.
The government approved the construction of the wind farm immediately after visit to Scotland the president of the United States Donald Trumpwho has spoken out against wind farms, especially those located near his golf courses.
"While Scotland is abandoning its oil past to become a world leader in wind power, Trump has been emphasizing that Aberdeen is the oil capital of Europe, and insisted on further development of this sector," notes Bloombreg.
