Ukraine resumes transportation of containers through Black Sea

Ukraine resumed container transportation through the Black Sea. A container ship entered one of the ports of Greater Odesa for the first time since the beginning of the full-scale war, the local outlet Dumska reported.

The pioneer was T Mare under the flag of Panama. It had already set out on its way back to Constanta.

So far, this is not a full-fledged specialized ship, but a so-called feeder, which makes charter flights between Constanta and the ports of Greater Odesa, the publication notes.

Until then, container transportation was carried out to a limited extent through the Danube ports of Odesa Oblast.

In mid-March, the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Yuriy Vaskov said that the first container shipments through the Ukrainian sea corridor could take place within two to three weeks.

In February, the Ukrainian sea corridor reached a record volume of export and import - 8 million tons, of which 60-65% fell on agricultural products, while the rest were ore, metals, import of fertilizers. The renewal of container and ferry transportation will add at least 20% to the volume of transportation, predicted Vaskov.

In January 2024, Ukraine reached a record during the large-scale invasion in terms of physical export volumes - 12 million tons of products, which is only 2 million tons less than in pre-war January 2022. Of these, 8.7 million tons were transported by sea. 6.3 million tons of cargo pass through the ports of Greater Odesa.
