Ukraine's first Japanese modular bridge built near Ternopil – photos, video
On Thursday, October 30, the first Japanese modular bridge in Ukraine was opened for traffic in Ternopil region. This was reported by the State Agency for Reconstruction.
A metal bridge over the Hnizna River replaces the old one that was damaged in June due to an accident with a truck that exceeded the permitted weight.
After the repairs, the permissible load on the bridge has increased several times and amounts to 100 tons.
The bridge in the village of Chernykhivtsi is part of the P-43 road (Ternopil – Zbarazh – Lanivtsi), which is used by about 10,000 vehicles daily.
The repair work lasted three months. During this time, the damaged structure was dismantled, new supports were erected, and a new metal bridge was assembled and installed.
In addition, the riverbed was strengthened, gabions were installed on the bridge slopes, approaches to the artificial structure were restored and their foundations were strengthened, and horizontal markings were applied.
The day before, representatives of the state enterprise National Institute of Infrastructure Development tested the bridge for quality and reliability, as well as compliance with modern state building standards.
The test results showed that the technical condition of the bridge meets the highest level of operational requirements.
According to information from Ternopil Regional Water Authority, the new bridge's guaranteed service life is 50 years.
The metal modular structures used to build the new bridge in Chernykhivtsi were provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) as part of its grant assistance to Ukraine.
Funds for the rest of the emergency repair and restoration works and materials were allocated from the state budget. The works were performed by TechnoBudCenter LLC.
- In March 2025, it became known that the Japanese agency JICA plans to replace the American USAID in energy and infrastructure projects in Ukraine.
