Kyiv finds itself among priciest places to live globally once again

Kyiv took 132nd place (out of 173) in the ranking of the most expensive cities in the world to live in. The rating is published annually by the Economist Intelligence Unit.

Last year, the capital of Ukraine was excluded from the rating due to Russia's military aggression. In 2021, Kyiv took 118th place.

Moscow and St. Petersburg are the biggest losers in the rating: they dropped immediately to 105 and 74 places, respectively. The authors of the study explain the reason for such a sharp drop in the weakening of the ruble due to sanctions.

Singapore retained the status of the most expensive city in the world for the ninth time in the last eleven years.

The top ten also included three cities from the USA – New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco – and four from Western Europe – Zurich, Geneva, Paris and Copenhagen.

The study found that, on average, prices in major cities increased by 7.4% year-on-year in local currency for more than 200 commonly used goods and services.

Of the ten categories that determine a city's position in the ranking, prices for utility services grew the slowest over the past year, reflecting the weakening of the effects of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the authors of the study note.
