Report: Ukrainian refugee tide to EU now surpasses 4.2 million

Already 4.24 million people who left Ukraine after the Russian invasion had the status of temporary protection in EU countries as of October 31, reports Eurostat.

More than 98% of them are citizens of Ukraine. At the end of April, 3.9 million people had the status of temporary protection in the EU, at the end of July – 4.1 million people.

The main EU countries that granted temporary protection status to Ukrainians were Germany (1.21 million people, 28.7% of the total number), Poland (960,620 people, 22.7%) and the Czech Republic (364,450, 8.6%).

Compared to the end of September 2023, the number of beneficiaries of temporary protection from Ukraine increased in all EU countries, except for Denmark, where it decreased by 4.5% (-1,700 people).

The largest absolute growth was observed in Germany (+20,465, +1.7%), the Czech Republic (+6,490, +1.8%), and the Netherlands (+4,005, +3.0%).

Compared to the population of each EU country, the largest number of recipients of temporary protection per thousand persons at the end of October 2023 was observed in the Czech Republic (33.7), Estonia (26.3), Poland and Bulgaria (26.1), Lithuania (25.8), while the corresponding indicator at the EU level was 9.5 per thousand people.

Adult women accounted for almost half (46.4%) of recipients of temporary protection in the EU. Children made up almost a third (33.4%), and adult men made up a little more than a fifth (20.2%) of the total number.
