Ukraine’s traditional energy generation base, particularly thermal power, is shrinking each year due to the ongoing full-scale war, Volodymyr Kudrytskyi, CEO of Ukrenergo, said in an interview with BBC Ukraine.

"Some damages are total, while in other cases, debris or blast waves have damaged equipment or infrastructure. Repair times can range from several weeks or months to one or two years. Some power units, clearly, won't be restored in the foreseeable future," Kudrytskyi explained.

The head of Ukrenergo also noted that Ukraine will not be able to restore the missing 9 GW of generation capacity by this winter. However, the country has the opportunity to import electricity, which, although not covering 100% of the necessary generation, will significantly help.

The ability to import electricity has been made possible by the integration of the Ukrainian and European energy systems, along with the liberalization of prices in the wholesale electricity market.

"Time is against traditional generation, which is why it's critically important to quickly develop decentralized new generation — generation that will be resilient to missile strikes," Kudrytskyi stated.

In the fall of 2023, Ukraine conducted its first electricity export and import auction under European rules.

In June 2024, Ukraine increased its electricity imports by 91%, with major supplies coming from Hungary.

However, in July, Ukraine reduced electricity imports after three months of record-high supplies.
