US President Donald Trump said at the G7 summit that he is in no hurry to impose tougher sanctions against Russia, despite calls from European allies, Bloomberg reports.

Trump has repeatedly stated that he is considering the possibility of imposing new economic sanctions against Russia, but has not yet made a final decision.

The US President stressed that he is now waiting to see "whether the deal will be signed" and expressed concern about the impact that the imposition of sanctions will have on the US.

"Don't forget, you know, sanctions cost us a lot of money. When I impose sanctions on a country, it costs the United States a lot of money, huge amounts of money," Trump said.

He added: "It's not easy, let's sign a document that's talking about billions and billions of dollars. Sanctions are not that easy. It's not just a one-way street."

European leaders are pushing for additional sanctions, seeing them as critical to pressuring Russian President Vladimir Putin to negotiate an end to the full-scale war against Ukraine.

Instead, Putin still refuses a ceasefire and direct negotiations with President Volodymyr Zelensky, demanding maximum territorial concessions.
