On Thursday, August 7, the increased US duties imposed by the administration of Donald Trump came into effect. They will affect dozens of countries, including the European Union.

"Billions of dollars in tariffs will now flow to the United States of America," wrote Trump at midnight on Truth Social.

According to Trump's estimate, the largest duties will be paid by "countries that have been taking advantage of the United States for years, laughing at us.".

The maximum rate is set for Brazil – its goods will be subject to a 50% duty.

Some tariffs were the result of framework agreements (such as, in the case of the UK ), but for most countries, tariffs were set by Trump's unilateral decision.

Imports to the United States from other countries, including Ukraine, will be subject to a basic duty of 10%. At the same time, the overall average effective tariff rate will rise to more than 17%, according to CNBC. This is the highest rate since 1935, during the Great Depression, according to the Yale Budget Lab think tank.

Revision of tariffs was Trump's campaign promise.
