Ukraine's Ukroboronprom and Poland's PGZ agree on defense collaboration
Ukraine's state-owned defense conglomerate Ukroboronprom and Poland's Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa (PGZ) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to enhance strategic cooperation in the defense industry, according to a statement by Minister of Strategic Industries Herman Smetanin on his Telegram channel.
The memorandum outlines key areas of collaboration between the defense industries of Ukraine and Poland, including:
- Joint production of ammunition;
- Maintenance of armored vehicles and artillery systems;
- Development of air defense capabilities.
Additionally, the cooperation aims to create financial mechanisms to attract resources under the European Defense Industrial Strategy (EDIS) and the European Defense Industrial Development Programme (EDIDP).
Smetanin expressed gratitude to the Polish government for supporting Ukraine's defense-industrial complex during the challenging wartime conditions. He emphasized that Ukraine has a significant need for explosives and critical components, as well as deeper cooperation not only between individual defense companies but also at the industry level.
Poland spent a record $38.5 billion on new military equipment in 2024.
On August 15, Business Insider reported that a private Polish company plans to build a factory to produce 155-mm artillery shells with a capacity of 180,000 units per year. Furthermore, Poland's defense budget will increase to 4.7% of GDP in 2025.
