Handelsblatt: European Commission plans to impose 25-50% duties on Chinese steel imports

The European Commission is planning to impose new import duties ranging from 25% to 50% on Chinese steel and related products in the coming weeks. About reported german publication Handelsblatt, citing informed sources.
The EU plans to introduce such large-scale protective measures due to the influx of cheap goods from China, which intensified after the United States effectively closed the market from Chinese imports as part of its trade policy Donald Trump.
In addition, the EU plans to start promoting the "Buy European" principle. This principle stipulates that public procurement will give preference to goods produced in Europe.
For example, new bridges, subways, or railroad tracks should be built from "green" European metal. It is also planned to set quotas for large corporations and car rental companies to make them prefer European electric vehicles.
"Europe has no choice but to find a new balance," said European Commissioner for Industry Stefan Sejourne.
According to him, we need both deeper integration of the domestic market and protective measures against those partners who do not follow the rules.
China is already facing dozens of trade barriers. Since the beginning of 2024, more than 50 restrictive measures have been initiated against its steel in the world.
- On September 23, Bloomberg wrote that Chinese manufacturers have successfully adapted to the US trade restrictions by directing export flows to other markets.
