Second underground school opens in Ukraine's Kharkiv – photos
A new underground school in Kharkiv has been built and opened for 750 children, according to Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov.
Terekhov reported that once the second phase of construction is complete, the school will be able to accommodate nearly 1,000 students.
"We thought through every detail: we made classrooms more spacious, corridors wider, and set up inclusive and resource rooms to ensure comfort for both children and teachers," Terekhov noted.
He added that the school hosts children who are finishing primary school but are seeing each other in person for the first time.
"COVID and the war took away their chance for normal education. So, this is both joyful and bittersweet... But the most important thing is that they're together now," Terekhov wrote.
The school was built to the highest safety standards, thanks to funding from the Taiwanese government and support from international partners.
In total, more than 6,000 children are currently studying in Kharkiv's underground schools and metro stations.
