Lithuania may declare a state of emergency due to the loss of up to 100% of the fruit and berry harvest

The Lithuanian Ministry of Agriculture has appealed to the National Crisis Management Center to declare a state of emergency due to damage caused to agriculture by spring frosts, Lithuanian public broadcaster LRT reports.

The department noted that in some areas of the country, frosts destroyed up to 70–80% of the fruit and berry harvest, and in some cases even 100%.

Not only flowering gardens and berry bushes were affected, but also those crops that had already begun to form fruits.

According to the ministry, the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service recorded a natural meteorological phenomenon this spring – frosts during the period of active vegetation in Lithuania from April to May 2025.

"Taking into account the information received from municipalities about crops damaged or destroyed by frost, as well as the fact that two municipalities (Lazdijai and Vilkaviškis) have already declared a state of emergency at the municipal level, the ministry is initiating further action at the national level, proposing to declare a state of emergency at the state level," the Lithuanian ministry said.

Minister of Agriculture Ignas Hoffmann has asked the European Commission for emergency aid for Lithuanian farmers from the European Union's Agricultural Reserve.

It is expected that in the event of a national emergency being declared, affected farmers will be able to count on state and European support to compensate for losses.
