The Hamburg-based Consumer Protection Association has filed a lawsuit against German chocolate manufacturer Mondelez for reducing the weight of its Milka bars from 100 to 90 grams. About writes german weekly magazine Spiegel.

The lawsuit was filed with the Bremen Land Court, accusing the manufacturer of unfair competition and misleading customers.

According to food expert Armin Valet, many people have been buying Milka for years and don't notice that there is less chocolate in the package, and the price hasn't decreased, but even increased.

He noted that the thickness of the tiles was reduced by only a millimeter, and it is difficult to notice without direct comparison.

Consumers are demanding that the packaging be clearly and prominently labeled with a warning about weight changes for at least six months, and that the packaging itself be made smaller to match the contents.

Mondelez says that information about the new weight is on the packaging and published on social media and the Milka website. The changes are explained by a sharp rise in prices for cocoa and other ingredients.

The Bremen court has not yet made a decision. Mondelez must first respond to the lawsuit, after which the judges will determine the further course of the case.
