Poltava Region Becomes Ukraine's Leader in Watermelon and Melon Growing in 2025

In 2025, more than 5,000 hectares of gourds were sown in Poltava region, which is the largest figure in Ukraine. This was reported by the Department of Agricultural Development of the Poltava Regional State Administration, writes Suspilne Poltava.
This year, more than 2,000 hectares of melon were planted in Poltava region than last year. In general, due to unfavorable weather conditions in the spring, the timeframe for mass ripening and harvesting of the fruit was shifted by two weeks.
According to local farmers, the season for watermelons was not easy due to the late cold spring and frosts in May. This reduced yields by 25-30% compared to previous years.
Hryhoriy Khan, head of a farm in the village of Ustyvytsia, said that 95% of the 50 hectares of melon are under watermelon. Harvesting started a week ago, but the main ripening peak is expected in the second half of August.
"Of course, we don't expect the yield we planned, but the marketability of the watermelon is more or less normal, 50-60%, up to 70%."khan noted.
On average, over the years of operation, the farm has harvested 40 to 60 tons of fruit per hectare. Khan says they sell watermelons only in bulk.
"This year, I think we will still get about 25-35 tons. Now we mainly have a lot of requests from the city of Kyiv."khan emphasized.
- As of July 23, the price of watermelons from local farms ranges from 5-14 UAH/kg depending on the quality of the product and the volume of the batch.
