Hungary will not stop buying Russian oil, even if the US president Donald Trump will ask for it. This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the country Peter Siyarto in an interview with ATV after the UN General Assembly, writes Bloomberg.

During a meeting with the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the UN General Assembly, Trump said that may ask prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orban stop purchasing Russian oil.

At the same time, Siyarto emphasized that due to the country's geographical location, this is impossible.

"We are a landlocked country. It would be great if we had access to the sea, we could build an oil refinery or an LNG terminal on the coast and enter the global market. But this is not the case," Siyarto said.

The agency noted that these comments emphasize Hungary's ambiguous position due to Orban's close ties to both Trump and the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.

Minister for Foreign Affairs of Germany Johannes Wadefuhl noted that Trump's request to Hungary and Slovakia looks ironic, but could be a positive signal for the EU.

The European Commission is currently reviewing trade measures against oil coming from Russia through the Druzhba pipeline, which supplies Hungary and Slovakia.

Both countries are still do not want to give up from Russian oil, citing risks to energy security.

Hungary also rejected an alternative oil pipeline through Croatia, citing high tariffs and insufficient capacity.

Slovakia emphasized that any move away from Russian oil is possible only if there are reliable alternatives.
