The cause of the explosion has not yet been announced.

The CDU-11 installation is the most productive at the plant. The second unit of this type, CDU-10, was already idle due to a fire at the beginning of August. Each of them has a capacity of about 8.6 million tons of oil per year.

At crude distillation units, oil is separated into the main fractions – gasoline, kerosene, diesel.

In 2023, the Omsk Refinery processed 21.28 million tons of oil and produced 5.07 million tons of gasoline (11.5% of production in the Russian Federation), 8.1 million tons of diesel fuel (9.2%) and 1.63 million tons of aviation gas (15%).

According to the Russian authorities, as a result of the explosion, seven people were hospitalized, including one in serious condition.

In July 2024, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that as long as Russia strikes energy facilities in Ukraine, Kyiv will retaliate against Russian energy infrastructure.
