The construction of a European-gauge railway will enable Lviv to launch an urban rail system, Mayor Andriy Sadovyi said on Saturday while presenting the city’s 2025 annual report.

"I said last year that we have the ambition to become the first city in Ukraine to receive a European gauge. By 2027, the line should reach Sknyliv station, and by 2030 it should extend to the main railway station. In addition, by 2030 there should be two branches to Warsaw — passenger and freight. There should also be a separate line from Vienna to Sknyliv. Sknyliv must be connected to the airport, and the entire system should be integrated with the main station," Sadovyi said.

According to him, the city is working closely with Ukrzaliznytsia and international partners to implement the project.

Sadovyi stressed that Lviv is particularly interested in the European-gauge railway because it would significantly improve urban mobility.

"We once tried to launch a city train in Lviv, but it failed because it was not economically viable. If the European gauge is built properly here, we will get high-quality rail connections to Ryasne, to Sykhiv as far as Davydiv, and later to Hlynyany Trakt and Dubliany. In fact, Lviv will gain an alternative urban transport network based on city trains," the mayor said.
