IAEA: Ukraine managed to normalize NPP operation after shelling
The International Atomic Energy Agency reported that Ukraine managed to normalize the operation of nuclear power plants after russian shelling on November 19when each of them lost connection to one of the high-voltage power lines. This was reported on website IAEA.
"This week at Ukraine’s three operating nuclear power plants – Khmelnytsky, Rivne and South Ukrainian – electricity output has largely returned to normal after last week’s military attacks on the electrical grid. Nearly all power units are now operating at full capacity, with only one unit remaining at reduced power. Additionally, the high voltage power lines lost during the attacks have all been restored," the agency said.
The IAEA is preparing a new expert mission to inspect several substations of key importance for nuclear safety. Experts will have to assess the extent of the recent damage and its possible impact on the operation of Ukrainian nuclear power plants. According to the agency, this will be the sixth such inspection.
- After the massive Russian strike on November 19, the situation in Ukraine's energy system deteriorated sharply and the duration of rolling blackouts increased significantly. For example, on November 20, some addresses in Kyiv had electricity for only six hours a day.
- Ukrenergo does not rule out that blackouts in Ukraine will last all winter.
