Lviv is preparing for possible blackouts: buses have been launched instead of trams
Last week, Lviv began checking the readiness of critical infrastructure facilities to operate in an emergency. About this reported in the city council.
We have already tested the operation of traffic lights in the absence of electricity and checked the operation of utilities in the absence of water supply.
And on Saturday, October 18, they are practicing a scenario where some trams cannot run on the line due to a power outage.
Instead of trams #1, #2, and #7, which have their final stops in the Lychakiv district, buses were launched.
"During the test, we check the readiness of carriers and drivers, the coordination of services and the effectiveness of alternative bus routes. If we find any weaknesses in the algorithm, we will have time to eliminate them," said Oleh Zabarylo, head of the Department of Urban Mobility and Street Infrastructure.
Also, if necessary, autonomous trolleybuses will be used to transport passengers in the event of a blackout.
The authorities consider the complete absence of a centralized water supply to be one of the most difficult scenarios. If this happens, more than 60 stationary tanks are planned to be placed in Lviv. Municipal and private vehicles will be used to deliver water.
Pros in words according to Dmytro Vankovych, Director of Lvivvodokanal, all water intakes and pumping stations in the city are equipped with generators. This makes it possible to maintain pressure in the network and supply water to the first floors of buildings.
In the event of a complete blackout, the company will be able to maintain the pressure in the network on the backup power supply for up to 30 days.
Testing traffic lights lasted for a day and a half. During this time, 150 traffic lights were disconnected from the main power supply and switched to autonomous operation.
The test showed high autonomy of the system, according to the city council: 95 traffic lights were able to work continuously for about 24 hours, and another 55 lasted from 8 to 20 hours.
- on October 10, the mayor of Lviv Andriy Sadovyi warned that they would not be able to supply heating in the coming weeks because more than 10 million cubic meters of gas are missing.
- After massive attacks on electric power facilities after a long break, emergency power outages have resumed in Ukraine. They are also affected the western regions.
