The government of Norway will provide NOK 1.5 billion (USD 139.5 million) to ensure gas and electricity imports to Ukraine through the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Ukraine’s energy ministry said in a statement.

Part of the funds will also be used to repair and maintain critical electricity infrastructure in Ukraine and provide emergency power supply in areas affected by hostilities.

Norway has already provided Ukraine with more than 250 tonnes of equipment for restoration work in the energy sector.

“The energy sector is one of the key areas in which we cooperate and support Ukraine,” Norwegian prime minister Jonas Gahr Støre said as he visited Ukraine on Thursday.

At the meeting with the Norwegian PM, Ukraine’s energy minister German Galushchenko noted that Ukraine is interested in Norway’s experience in developing hydroelectric power generation and, in particular, its expertise regarding the collapse of the Nova Kakhovka dam.

The parties also discussed cooperation in the development of offshore wind generation.

“Ukraine also has significant potential for wind power development in the Black and Azov Seas. And we want to develop cooperation with Norway in this area," Mr Galushchenko was quoted as saying.
