Ukraine starts exporting electricity to Moldova, Poland and Slovakia next

Ukraine has held an auction to allocate the capacity of interstate networks for electricity exports to Moldova, its first since being forced to conserve energy due to Russian missile strikes on critical infrastructure almost six months ago.

Ukraine’s state energy operation Ukrenerho announced on Monday that 330 MW out of the 650 MW of the total available grid capacity for Moldova had been distributed among four participants of the auction.

"Given the military risks, access to interstate crossings is allocated only for a short-term period at daily auctions," the company said.

Later on Monday, Ukrenerho will hold an auction for the allocation of 80 MW of cross-border capacity towards Poland, with negotiations underway to open exports to Slovakia.

Last week, Ukraine’s ministry of energy decided to resume electricity exports to Europe under the conditions of providing Ukrainian consumers with electricity and excess electricity production.

Ukraine began exporting electricity to the European Union in the summer of 2022, and it quickly became one of the main export articles. Since October 11, 2022, due to Russian strikes on the energy system, exports have stopped.

Since mid-February, there is no longer a power deficit in Ukraine.
