Ukraine rises in global ranking of pig iron producers

Ukraine produced 3.37 million tons of pig iron in the seven months of 2023, which allowed it to rise from 17th to 16th position in the global ranking of 40 iron-producing countries, reports the association Ukrmetalurgprom with reference to the data of the World Association of Steel Producers (Worldsteel).

Pig iron production in Ukraine is still 30% below the volume of January-July 2022.

In total, since the beginning of the year, metallurgical enterprises of the world have produced 838.42 million tons of pig iron, which is 1.9% higher than the figure for the first seven months of 2022.

The first place belongs to China, whose metallurgists smelted 528.92 million tons of pig iron, which is 3.5% higher than the figure for the same period in 2022. The share of Chinese pig iron in world production in January-July was 63.1%.

In the global ranking of steel producers, Ukraine retained the 25th position among 64 countries with a production volume of 3.43 million tons in January-July (minus 28.9% compared to the same period last year).

Global steel production for the first seven months of the year amounted to 1.1 billion tons, which is 0.12% lower than in January-July 2022.

The leadership in steel production also belongs to China at 626.51 million tons (+2.5%).

On June 2, the USA extended the duty-free import for Ukrainian steel for one year.

On August 2, Ukraine introduced an anti-dumping duty on the import of wire and rolled steel from China.
