Ukraine ascends global rankings of iron and steel producers

Ukraine produced 1.75 million tons of pig iron in January-April 2023, which allowed it to rise from 19th to 17th position in the list of 40 iron-producing countries, reported the association Ukrmetalurgprom with reference to Worldsteel data.

Production of pig iron in Ukraine in the first four months of the year decreased by 54% compared to the same period last year.

Overall, in January-April, global metallurgical enterprises produced 471.1 million tons of pig iron, which is 2.34% higher than the figure for four months of 2022.

The first place in the list of the largest producers of cast iron belongs to China, where smelting for the reporting period amounted to 297.63 million tons, which is 5.8% higher than the figure for the same period in 2022. The share of Chinese pig iron in world production is 63.2%.

Also, Ukraine rose from 28th to 26th place among 64 steel-producing countries with 1.81 million tons (minus 54% compared to the figure for January-April 2022).

World steel production for four months amounted to 622.74 million tons, which is 0.34% lower than in January-April last year.

China also remains the leader here, where 354.39 million tons of steel were smelted (+4.1%). China's share in world steel production is 56.9%.

In nine months of 2022, due to the hostilities, Ukraine fell to 23rd place in the world in terms of steel production.
