Ukrainians in Germany: 65% plan to stay permanently

The proportion of Ukrainian refugees deciding to remain in Germany permanently has risen to 65%, according to Mark Siebert, head of the State Office for Refugee Affairs (LAF), Berliner Zeitung reported.

Siebert said that a year and a half ago, the majority of Ukrainians expressed a desire to return to Ukraine. "We see that this picture is changing, which is also evident from the growing participation in German language courses and increased activity at job fairs," he noted, as quoted by the publication.

These figures are based on regular surveys of Ukrainians living in large dormitories in Berlin under the care of the Refugee Affairs Office. Around 9,000 Ukrainians reside in such accommodations in Berlin, while the city hosts a total of 50,000 to 60,000 Ukrainians.

According to Eurostat, as of September 30, 2024, 1.12 million Ukrainians in Germany held temporary protection status.
