Russian shelling has damaged one of the two power lines supplying the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), leaving the plant connected to Ukraine's grid through only one remaining line, according to a statement from the Ministry of Energy.
The Energy Ministry has stated that repairs to the damaged power line will commence as soon as safety conditions allow.
"Once again, the Zaporizhzhia NPP faces a real threat of a blackout due to enemy shelling. The situation at the ZNPP remains dangerous due to the Russian occupation, and only the return of Ukrainian control over Europe's largest nuclear plant can guarantee its safe operation," Energy Minister German Halushchenko said.
Background
- The ZNPP frequently faces the risk of blackouts due to damage to power transmission lines caused by Russian forces. In November last year alone, Russian shelling disrupted one of the two power lines three times.
- On December 30, 2024, Energoatom reported that the Russians had failed to repair a reactor at the ZNPP, which could lead to a catastrophic accident.
