Nestlé withdraws from alliance to reduce methane emissions in dairy production

The world's largest food producer Nestle has announced its withdrawal from a global alliance that brings together major corporations to reduce methane emissions in dairy production. About writes Reuters.
This is the Dairy Methane Action Alliance, established in December 2023. The initiative's members, including Danone, Kraft Heinz, and Starbucks, have committed to measuring, publishing, and gradually reducing methane emissions in their dairy supply chains.
Nestle did not explain the reasons for leaving the alliance, but said that the company will continue to work to reduce greenhouse gases, including methane, and remains committed to its goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050
"Nestle regularly reviews its participation in external organizations. As part of this process, we have decided to terminate our membership in the Dairy Methane Action Alliance," the company said.
According to Nestlé, by the end of 2024, it managed to reduce methane emissions by 21% compared to 2018.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, methane has a greenhouse effect almost 30 times more powerful than carbon dioxide.
The Environmental Defense Fund, which initiated the alliance, estimates that agriculture is responsible for about 40% of anthropogenic methane emissions, most of which come from livestock.
- On September 2, Nestle unexpectedly dismissed its CEO, 63-year-old Laurent Frakes due to undisclosed romantic relationships with a subordinate, which violates the company's corporate code of conduct.
