Poland selects two border crossings with Ukraine to launch EES system

Poland will launch a new EU entry/exit system (Entry/Exit System, EES), primarily at two checkpoints on the border with Ukraine. About said polish Border Guard Service.
As early as this Sunday, October 12, EES will start operating at the Medyka-Szeginie road border crossing and the Przemyśl-Mostyska railroad crossing.
The new border control system will operate in 29 European countries, including those associated with the Schengen area, and will apply to third-country nationals entering the EU for a short period of time.
EES will be implemented gradually over a period of six months. During this time, the collection of traveler data may not be carried out at all border crossings at once.
The EES will automatically record the date of entry and exit, as well as collect biometric data such as fingerprints, face photos, etc. This will gradually eliminate the need to stamp passports.
The new system will provide all EU law enforcement agencies with quick access to information on the date and place of entry into the Schengen area, as well as on the foreigner's residence status – regardless of which EU country they are in.
Poland has already prepared everything necessary to launch the system, both in legal and technical terms.
The spokesman for the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, Andriy Demchenko, said on the eve of said the new automated system will not necessarily go live on October 12 in all EU countries.
According to him, the control will not necessarily take place on trains, but may also be carried out at arrival stations.
Regarding the queues at the border, the SBGS spokesperson said that there are none now due to the seasonal decline in passenger traffic.
- Polish border guards started testing a new biometric control system in mid-September 2025. Ukrainian border guards warned of possible queues at the border.
