In the first half of 2025, more than 5,300 businesses were registered in Ukraine that turned out to be "one-dayers." For comparison, in 2021, there were only 96 such individual entrepreneurs. About writes Opendatabot.

In total, more than 137,000 new individual entrepreneurs were registered this year, but more than 157,000 ceased operations.

Following technical problems with the registers and the introduction of new taxes, almost 120,000 individual entrepreneurs closed in the first quarter of 2025.

In the second quarter, the situation stabilized: from April to June, almost 74,000 new sole proprietorships were opened in Ukraine, and just over 51,000 closed, which is less than in the same period last year.

The majority of new businesses in 2025 were registered by women – 61% of the total, or more than 83,000. Men accounted for approximately 54,000 new sole proprietorships, or 39%.

Retail is the most commonly chosen sector by new entrepreneurs, with over 39,000 newly registered individual entrepreneurs. This is followed by wholesale trade, IT, information services, and catering.

At the same time, these same sectors also show the highest rate of closures. In the first half of the year, more than 48,000 individual entrepreneurs closed in retail, and 18,000 in IT.

Despite the overall decline, there are industries where the number of new businesses exceeds the number of terminated ones. The largest increase was recorded in education (+2,541), medicine (+1,203), and law and accounting (+975).

The largest number of new sole proprietorships were opened in Kyiv – almost 19,000, as well as in Dnipropetrovs'k and Lviv regions – 13,000 and 10,400, respectively.

At the same time, the capital remains the leader in terms of the number of closed businesses – more than 20,000 individual entrepreneurs, followed by Kharkiv and Dnipro regions.

There are also regions where the number of new sole proprietorships exceeds the number of closed ones. These are Rivne, Lviv, Kyiv, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Volyn regions.
