Ukraine successfully tested a prototype battery made of domestic graphite

Gennadiy Butkevich's BGV Group Management (co-owner of the ATB chain) has successfully tested a prototype lithium-ion battery made from Ukrainian graphite. This was reported by its press service on Tuesday, May 20.
"As part of the BGV Graphite pilot project, a research sample of anode material for a lithium-ion battery was tested. The result of the electrochemical test is at the highest level of world standards," the company said in a statement .
The anode is based on spherical graphite obtained from the enriched concentrate of the Balakhivske deposit in Kirovograd region. The graphite was spheroidized in October 2024 at the facilities of the German company Netzsch.
The sample of anode material was made at the Department of Chemical Technology and Resource Conservation of the Kyiv National University of Technology and Design. It is a standard lithium coin cell with a diameter of 20 mm and a thickness of 1.6 mm .
The next step will be to develop a full-fledged two-electrode (with cathode) battery prototype in the fall of 2025.
- In January 2025, the BGV Group completed laboratory and semi-industrial tests for the additional purification of graphite to 99.99% battery quality and the subsequent production of spherical graphite (SPG) from it.
- The BGV graphite plant is expected to be one of the largest in Europe. Its design capacity will be 50,000 tons of graphite concentrate, of which 19,000 tons will be suitable for the production of spherical graphite for lithium-ion batteries.
