Reuters: Tesla's share of US electric car market falls to eight-year low

Share of electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla Elon Musk in the US market in August 2025 fell to the lowest level in the last eight years. About this writes Reuters citing data from the Cox Automotive research company.
According to analysts, Tesla, which once owned more than 80% of the US market, took only 38% in August. The share of the company's cars fell below 40% for the first time since October 2017.
For comparison, in July, Tesla's electric vehicles accounted for 42%, and in June, almost 49%.
The reason for the decline in sales is the emergence of a growing number of competitors who are actively offering discounts and favorable leasing terms.
For example, Hyundai, Honda, Kia, and Toyota increased sales of electric cars by 60-120% thanks to bonuses, and Volkswagen increased ID.4 sales by more than 450% in July after launching special promotions.
Tesla also increased its sales: in July, they grew by 7% to 53,816 cars. But this was not enough to keep its market share. In August, sales rose again, by 3.1%, but the overall market grew much faster, by 14%.
Another reason for Tesla's downfall is that the company hasn't updated its lineup in a long time. Its last new car, the Cybertruck pickup, wasn't as successful as the Model 3 or Model Y. The updated Model Y also failed to meet expectations.
The situation is also complicated by the image factor: the political activities of Elon Musk and his cooperation with Donald Trumpwhich he suspended after the conflict in May, negatively affected the brand's perception among some Americans.
Experts note that Tesla is currently facing a difficult choice: either to maintain sales through discounts, losing profitability, or to maintain margins and lose market share to competitors.
- In August Tesla has raised the cost of the most expensive Cybertruck by $15,000 despite weak sales.
- On September 5, it was reported that Tesla has offered its CEO Elon Musk a new compensation package whose potential value could reach about $1 trillion.
