Sales of electric cars in the EU surpassed gasoline car sales for the first time in December

Sales of all-electric cars in the European Union exceeded sales of gasoline cars for the first time in December 2025, according to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association.
The share of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) reached 22.6% of total sales, while gasoline cars accounted for 22.5%. Hybrid cars made up 33.7%, diesel cars 7.2%, plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) 10.7%, and other types of cars 3.3%.
The association noted that in 2025, new car registrations in the EU increased by 1.8% year-on-year, reaching 10.8 million units compared with 10.6 million a year earlier. However, total volumes remain significantly below pre-pandemic levels.
By the end of 2025, the share of battery electric vehicles rose to 17.4%, up from 13.6% in 2024. Gasoline cars accounted for 26.6% of registrations, hybrids for 34.5%, plug-in hybrids for 9.4%, diesel cars for 8.9%, and other vehicles for 3.3%.
At the same time, Tesla’s sales in the EU fell by 37.9% over the year, while Chinese automaker BYD recorded a 227.8% increase in sales.
