The Bunge oil extraction plant in the city of Dnipro was damaged by Russian shelling on January 5, Mayor Borys Filatov said.

"The Russians attacked American-owned property, as the plant belongs to Bunge, a company headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri. As a result of the drone strike, about 300 tonnes of oil spilled onto the streets of Dnipro," Filatov wrote on Facebook."Municipal services are cleaning up the spill using sand and absorbent materials, but traffic along the embankment will be impossible for the next two to three days," he added.

Bunge is the producer of Oleina, one of the most popular brands of bottled sunflower oil in Ukraine. Its Dnipro facility is a sunflower seed processing plant with fully integrated crushing, refining and bottling operations.

  • Earlier, on the night of August 21, Russia carried out one of its largest combined attacks on Ukraine, launching 40 missiles and 574 drones. During that attack, the American-owned Flex manufacturing facility in Mukachevo, which produces electronic components, was also damaged.
  • Following the strike, US President Donald Trump said he had personally conveyed his dissatisfaction to Russian President Vladimir Putin over the attack on an American company.
