The United States raised duties to 50% on more than 400 steel and aluminum products

The U.S. Department of Commerce has announced an increase in tariffs on more than 400 categories of steel and aluminum products. About writes Reuters.
The increased duties will apply, in particular, to wind turbines, mobile cranes, household appliances, bulldozers, railroad cars, motorcycles, marine engines, furniture, and hundreds of other goods.
Under the new rules, the new duties cover 407 types of goods containing steel or aluminum. This part will be subject to a 50% tariff, while other materials in the products will be subject to the regular import duty rate.
In total, the decision covers imports worth more than $200 billion per year. According to Evercore ISI analysts, this will increase the average level of import duties in the United States by about one percentage point.
The list also includes auto parts, steel for electric vehicles, components for buses, air conditioners, refrigerators, and washing machines.
The car manufacturers asked the government not to expand the list, as the US lacks the capacity to produce the necessary parts. In particular, Tesla opposed new tariffs on steel for electric motors and wind turbines.
At the same time, American steel companies such as Cleveland Cliffs and Nucor supported the changes and called on the government to limit imports to boost domestic production.
"Today's measures expand the scope of the steel and aluminum duties and make them impossible to circumvent, helping to further revive the U.S. steel and aluminum industries," said Under Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Security Jeffrey Kessler.
