European plans to decarbonize the economy and wean themselves off Russian energy sources have created significant demand for a renewable analogue of natural gas – biomethane. Over five years, the EU aims to increase its production sevenfold, to 35 billion cubic meters per year – or about 10% of current natural gas consumption in Europe. However, current investment levels will only allow for one-third of this target to be achieved.

This gives Ukrainian biogas producers, who have already started producing and exporting "blue-green" fuel to Europe, a chance to occupy a new niche. In 2030, Ukrainian exports to the EU could grow to approximately €600 million. These are calculations by the authors of the Green Deal Ukraine project.
